So then the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.
The law was our guardian before Jesus Christ came. The "guardian" or a "custodian" refers to a person who governs the behavior of a child until the child is mature enough to know and do what is right. It can give rules and restrictions but it doesn't have to power to change the child's heart into a good heart, nor give the child an inheritance.
The law still functions the same thing until now. Without a heart to rely upon and trust in God's mercy, the law can still be burdensome. The more that we know the Law-Giver, the more we will learn how to have the heart to trust in his mercy like little children.
God used Mosaic law to reveal the sinfulness of man, and thus prepare us for salvation from sin through faith in Jesus Christ. Clearly, we are justified by our faith in Jesus Christ. Christ’s death and resurrection give each of us an opportunity to live by faith, believing we are children of God because of our faith in Jesus Christ.
Thank you, God, for the gift of your son and his promise of salvation!
