Pure Heart

April 17, 2018 Daily Devotion

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Read: Psalm 51

Looking back on my formative years, I can remember looking up to my parents and certain adult role models in my life. I expected a lot out of myself so that I would not let them down. My relationship with God was growing but did not supersede pleasing others. I can now see how patience and gentle God was with me for decades. Over the last decade of my life, as I drew closer to God an amazing thing happened- I felt him grow closer to me. I know that’s what he promises us in scripture and the more time I spent in prayer, meditation and in his presence, the more I felt at peace even in some stressful years. In speaking engagements and lectures, I physically feel the Holy Spirit choosing the words for me to say. During one keynote speech, as I started in prayer, the sun penetrated through the curtains right onto my face just as if God was saying: “We are going to let our light shine.” God’s gentle acts of kindness and compassion are all around us each day. I rejoice at how wonderful our God is…his ever presence keeps me constantly looking for signs of his love and compassion. This gives me purpose, renews my passion and recharges my spirit as each day is a new opportunity to Glorify God.

Psalm 51 is David's psalm to God when the prophet Nathan came to him after he committed adultery to Bathsheba. David prayed in humility to God and admitted wholeheartedly that he is a sinner. He knows that God alone is the one who can make his heart pure again. He understands the mercy and love God has for sinners like us.

Please be kind to yourself and live each day sacred. Rather than embracing shame and running away from God when we sin, we should go back to Him, to our Father.

We can always come to God and ask for a pure heart and a renewed spirit.
