Well, yes, as a matter of fact. Didn't Isaiah announce the coming of the "Prince of Peace" (9:5)? Didn't the angels sing "peace on earth" on the night Jesus was born (Luke 2:14)? Yet Simeon prophesized that Jesus would be a "sign that will be contradicted" (Luke 2:34). Jesus' entire public life was marked by division and controversy leading to his death on the cross.
Jesus knows that not all will embrace his message and enjoy the peace that comes with it. On a grand scale, we have seen divisions resulting in religious conflicts around the globe and on a more intimate scale, we see this in many families. Divisions do not have to be permanent. It is a choice. Will we lead with love and show kindness, acceptance, and compassion?
Jesus is the Prince of Peace. He came to bring peace to our divided hearts and to unite all in love for God is love.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
