And calling the crowd to Him with His disciples, He said to them, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny Himself and take up his cross and follow Me."
What do you usually feel when you receive a call from someone important to you? A loved one? Your parents? A friend that you haven’t talked for a long time? Or even an unexpected call from a celebrity or a person that you aspire to become one day? There is a certain impact when you receive a call from someone who is very important to you. The disciples most probably felt the same way when Jesus invited them to follow Him. There are doubts in the first place but they did follow anyway.
Now when they are with the crowds, Jesus made a declaration that challenges the faith of His followers. He said "If anyone would come after me, let him deny Himself and take up his cross and follow Me." When we think about our walk with God, people seem to view it as lying on a bed of roses. Some of them have a mindset that our spiritual walk is a cake walk that we will not encounter any struggles and problems. The truth is when God calls people to follow Him, it has a great price to pay.
We can offer our self to Him because He paid the greatest price for us. It is His life offered as a sacrifice for your salvation.
As we continue to follow Jesus today, how would we define our journey with Jesus? Does it include denying our self? Taking up our cross daily? Following Him? Think about it for a moment.
